The Nerd-Rage Guide to SDCC 2010 [Updated]
There is something for everybody at this week’s Comic-Con in San Diego; Girls being sexually harassed by sweaty guys, athletes in monster costumes wrestling in cage matches, and so much wasted time waiting in lines for panels that scientists could cure cancer with it. Why not try a new take on Comic-Con? Go only to things that will bring you extreme anger? Why? Because anger can sometimes lead to increased performances in tasks (this obviously unbiased study says). Plus, most geeks have an intense feeling of self-loathing. Nothing fits those masochist tendencies than subjecting oneself to events that will make your brain bleed from your ears.
1:00-2:00 USA Network’s Burn Notice
Who’s Gonna Be There: Bruce Campbell (Sam Axe), Matt Nix (creator and executive producer), and Alfredo Barrios, Jr. (executive producer).
Where: Ballroom 20
Geek Cred: 2.5 out of 5.
Why: Campbell is god, but sitting through the panel’s explanations for why the show’s main actors like Jeffery Donovan (Michael Westen) and Gabrielle Anwar (Super Skinny Spy) couldn’t be there. What? Was there a Crossing Jordan conference somewhere that Donovan had to be at? [joke courtesy of Donovan’s IMDB page]
1:00-2:00 CBLDF Master Session: Rob Liefeld: Designing Iconic Characters
Who’s Gonna Be There: Master of Feet Rob Liefeld
Where: Room 30CDE
Geek Cred: 4 out of 5. An actual comics panel! Liefeld did help create Deadpool. Good for him.
Why: Liefeld was one of the seven Image founders, and has had years of time drawing comics for the big guys. He also draws stuff like this:
Being someone of no artistic talent, I can’t rag on an artist too much. But girls need to have working spines. Go and ask him how to draw feet. Do it. Watch the men in black take you away.
11:45-12:45 Cartoon Network: Comedy Animation
Who’s Gonna Be There: Pendleton Ward (creator of Adventure Time), Jeremy Shada (voice of Finn), John DiMaggio (voice of Jake), and Tom Kenny (voice of Ice King). Also J. G. Quintel (creator of the awesome Regular Show) will be there.
Where: Room 6A
Geek Cred: If you’re bring a kid to the panel, 1.5/5; If you’re alone and over 25, 3.5/5
Why: Adventure Time and Regular Show are both great programs. I can vouch for them. I drove a drunk Pendleton Ward home from Comic-Con last year; he was a classy man. But there were be animation nerds in attendance. Nerds angry over Chowder and Flapjack’s cancelation and a programming block called “CNReal”. It will be awesome to watch.
3:30-4:30 MTV’s Teen Wolf
Who’s Gonna Be There: Tyler Posey (Maid in Manhattan), Tyler Hoechlin (Road to Perdition), Dylan O’Brien, Crystal Reed, series creator/exec producer Jeff Davis (Criminal Minds) and director Russell Mulcahy (Highlander). No one you know.
Where: Room 6A
Geek Cred: Seeing as the MTV crowd doesn’t attend Comic-Con, you might have to be over 30 to be interested in what’s going on with Teen Wolf. 3.7/5
Why: Because going there in protest for Michael J Fox would be amazing. Stand up during the Q&A, yell at the young actors that they’ve probably never even seen Back to the Future, and sit back down as chaos erupts.
7:30-8:30 Klingon Lifestyles: IKV Stranglehold
Who’s Gonna Be There: Uh…no idea. Here’s the official SDCC description:
The latest mission of the Stranglehold finds the crew pitted against Starfleet in trying to posses a mysterious object that could mean the possible death of anyone. Can the return of Eeba and Merkin help or hinder this? All species are welcome to experience the ongoing voyage and adventure of life aboard a Klingon vessel.
Where: Room 6A
Geek Cred: The sheer fact that I have no idea what’s occuring at this panel makes it a 5/5.
Why: Either this is a group of Stark Trek fans who meet every year to come up with an ongoing expanded universe story, or they’re going to be acting out Star Trek scenes in costume. Simply going to this wearing normal street clothes will be amazing.
10:00-11:00 Twilight Fanfiction Author Fangroup
Who’s Gonna Be There: A ton of people who write fanfiction for Twilight. Snowqueens Icedragon (Master of the Universe), m81170 (An Introduction to Swirl & Daisy), MsKathy (The Trip Home), HMonster4 (Deconstructing Dracula), Giselle-lx (Ithaca is Gorges), ElleCC (A Murmur of Fire in the Vein), and Amethyst Jackson (Bonne Foi).
Geek Cred: 1/5
Why: Last year Twilight fans were so desperate to see their panel they got into the conference center and sat through multiple panels before it, just to get good seats. It was not good for the community. Going to this panel doesn’t even give you the ability to stare at attractive celebrities. It’s merely aspiring writers who want nothing more than to work in Stephanie Myers’ realm.
11:15-12:15 Marvel: Cup O’ Joe
Who’s Gonna Be There: Marvel’s EIC and CCO Joe Quesada and guests.
Where: Room 6BCF
Geek Cred: 4/5
Why: Joe Quesada isn’t even that popular with Marvel fanboys, and the Cup O’ Joe panel is an open forum for fans to either express love for the company or ask hard hitting questions such as “Joe why did you erase 40 years of Spiderman continuity? Do you want to make my life pointless?”
